From 1990–2020, the number of records of oysters increased in most regions, though less so in Canada where regular monitoring led to consistently high relative numbers of records. The number of estuaries with the species documented as present increased from 11 pre-2000 to 63 post-2000 (Fig 6). This underscores the need for an updated range-wide synthesis of the population status of both native O. Gigas is larger (Fig 1), grows faster, and free-spawns eggs, while O. Lurida releases larvae after a short brooding period, and typically occurs lower in the intertidal zone [15, 19, 26]. However, they often co-occur within sites and within the mid-intertidal [16, 19] and both perform some of the same ecosystem services, such as water filtration [27]. We developed and implemented novel spatial analysis approaches that yielded an enhanced understanding of conservation issues.
